Perspective in emotions – where’s your nucleus?

Roller coasters. Who doesn’t know the concept of one and what it does to you, whether you like it or not? Well, last week could be considered quite the week, I kid you not. Actually, this whole year has been one big roller coaster! This year I’ve been out of the country more times than I could count – and all to go build my relationship with God. Get more knowledge on who God is, who He is for me and fueling the desire to be more effective for His Kingdom.

So last week, I came back again from one such trips. Every time I come back from one of these trips, I come back on a high note as there are things to do, people to see – you know? This time though, coming back was totally different. I came home to a heaviness I wasn’t used to. Huh? What’s happening?

The verse found in James 1:2-3 which says Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Perseverance? Seriously? God knows my heart, so I’m being very honest here: MORE trials, and they are to be considered joy?

So to try to navigate this onset of emotions, I went to Playa Lechi. It’s where I get back to a sense of calm and see God for who He is. He created all of this and much much .. infinitely much more, right?

What does this picture make you think of? On the positive note we see the blue skies, the calming sea, the popping colors. When I took this picture some days ago, what I saw was sadness and loneliness. The boat having had some “sla di bida” as they say here, or have seen better times. So actually, that day, the picture captured my feelings exactly.

But if I take a moment to zoom out. Zoom out of my thoughts, my circumstances or my perceived misery… The picture changes.

Gone is the perceived loneliness and misery. Look at that tree ‘watching over’ the sea, and the boat. Look at the bench, where a mere passerby can sit and accompany the boat and enjoy the calming sea… with the boat. All it took, was a shift in perspective. Great my surprise to know that it also works with emotions! Who would’ve thought?

So the question then comes to you. What can assist you today, to shift your perspective?
